Shopfront was a 12-day event-based exhibition installation project.

The overarching premise for Shopfront was the construction of a social space, a platform whereby conversations and events could occur, as a changing installation of objects, still-life and activity.

Over the 12 days of its duration, the space of Shopfront changed each day. The installation aspect was utilised as a means to evoke a social space that was multifunctional. At times it operated as installation reminiscent of a shop, a garden, a floral display, a florist, a seminar space, a public garden and or seating space. The shop space included the interior shop space and Station Square (including the transactional space directly in front of the shop). The installation was adapted to the nature of each event, seminars, workshop and exhibition. We were interested in using the window as a transitional space, as the interface between interior exterior space. Thus it became a projection space (back projection onto window, using vinyl as the screen) for a video of a large series of driveby images shot over summer of Auckland's flowering trees and shrubs. The vinyl was cut to the proportions of the projection.

In total, there were 5 evenings of video screenings, 3 public talks and 3 participatory events; Friday Night Takeaways (the public were invited to take away a cutting for their own garden), Flowers & Foliage Depot (people were asked to bring in plant matter from their own garden to add to the Shopfront installation), and a Flower Arranging workshop (facilitated by Priscilla Hunt and Lynette Gumm from MIT Floristry school), as well as the opening event.

Shopfront hours were 5-8pm, Tue 8th - Fri 11th and 2-8pm, Sat 12th - Sat 19th March. The artists were present throughout all open hours due to the changing nature of the project.

#14 hibiscus - apricot

Hibiscus film is a separate work that was utilised in the Shopfront installation. It is a documentary-style HD film of 19 hibiscus blooms shot in real-time (01:00min of each bloom filmed in-situ on the hibiscus plant - as affected by weather/ insects). Full length film is 19:00min.
